Why print and publish by hand?
The range of publishing techniques and materials spans from the most brilliantly simple to the most exquisitely complex. Many writers and artists consider their first “real” book a professional milestone. However, the traditional publishing process demands a high upfront investment of time and money before any copies can be produced. Emerging artists, public artists, interactive artists, reporters, and educators may prefer a simple publishing method that can produce copies quickly with a low barrier to access.
Thank you for the amazingly fast response and turn-around! It’s been a giant learning and inspirational process. Print will always be more real than the screen, so the media services you provide are invaluable.

Why Camassia?
Camassia quamash, also known as camas, camassia, common camas, small camas, kwetlal, or quamash, represents an important food source and a reminder of Indigenous resilience in its native Pacific Northwest, extending south to California and east to the Rocky Mountains. Many peoples, including the Interior Salish, cultivate camas as a staple, and found themselves in conflict with colonial government when settlers plowed camas fields in the late 1800s, effectively destroying generations of stored food. Camas bulbs take 3-5 years to mature to a size large enough to harvest, and are eaten similarly as sweet potatoes, although they can cause significant stomach upset when prepared incorrectly, as settlers often did.
The restoration of camas represents to me a re-orienting of values away from exploitation and toward connection.
In the world of writing and publishing, we may be yearning for the fantasy of signing that big book deal that gets us rich, or we may be preening for the ever-present camera that is social media. We get so caught up wondering if we could participate in the grand financial schemes and attention economies that hold us hostage, that we don’t stop to consider if we should. Now we struggle to differentiate between AI- and human-created artwork and poetry, and we obsess over likes and followers as if those metrics tell us anything about our creative ability.
We have our traditional mega-publishers, and we have our local and indie publishers, but in Spokane I can see that people are hungry for something more real and more rooted in our community. Just as the grass-like camas leaves emerge early in spring, our home-grown writers are peeking their heads above the crowd, looking for their opportunity. Although it may take a few years to reach one of those dream publishing goals, each year we grow a little bit more as we share our work with others, first informally at open mics and workshops, then formally in performances and journals. Camassia Creative Media is here for writers and artists who are ready to take that next step, from swapping battered notebooks with a friend to sharing unique chapbooks and zines with strangers.
Traditionally, camas bulbs are mass harvested and either pit-roasted or boiled all together. The community gathers for a feast of fresh camas, then they preserve the remaining food. Mature camas bulbs are no bigger than a child’s fist, yet when many are collected, they can feed a large group of people. Like the many little camas bulbs, my hope is that the zines, chapbooks, and other micro-print works from Camassia Creative Media will nourish the Spokane community and adorn us with blooms of creative spirit.
